About Jiangmen

Jiangmen is a large city in the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong Province and is often referred to as the hometown of overseas Chinese (Wuyi Qiaoxiang). An estimated five million overseas Chinese around the world have their roots in the Jiangmen region — more than from any other city in China. The famous Diaolou watchtowers in Kaiping District have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007. These unique defensive towers were built by returning overseas Chinese in the early 20th century and combine Chinese, Islamic, Roman, and Baroque architectural styles in a fascinating mix. Over 1,800 Diaolou still stand in the landscape — a unique architectural monument worldwide. Jili Village and Majianglong Village are among the best-preserved Diaolou ensembles: watchtowers amidst rice fields, bamboo groves, and old village houses create a picturesque backdrop. The Kaiping Diaolou Cultural Park offers guided tours through the most beautiful sites. The city itself features the Changdi Riverside Park, a lively night market, and the Wuyi Overseas Chinese Museum, which documents the stories of emigrants. The regional cuisine combines Cantonese traditions with influences brought back by returnees from Southeast Asia, America, and Europe.
