About Jieyang
Jieyang is a city in the east of Guangdong Province and the cultural heart of the Chaoshan region — a unique cultural zone in southern China with its own language (Teochew), its own cuisine, and centuries-old traditions. The Chaoshan culture is considered one of the best-preserved ancient Chinese cultures and has been spread worldwide by overseas Chinese. Jieyang is China's capital of jade processing: over 100,000 people in the city work in the jade industry, from polishing and carving to trading. The Yangmei Jade Market is one of the largest jade markets in China, where local artists create intricate carvings and traders deal in precious pieces. The old town of Jieyang, with its well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty buildings, offers a fascinating insight into traditional Chaoshan architecture. The Xüfeng Temple complex and the historic clan halls with their elaborate wooden carvings and ceramic roof figures are architectural masterpieces. The Chaoshan cuisine (Teochew cuisine) is one of the eight great Chinese regional cuisines and is famous for its freshness, lightness, and seafood dishes. Gongfu tea — the artful tea ceremony with tiny cups and concentrated Oolong — originated here and is practiced during every visit, in every shop, and at any time of day. Mount Huangqi (Huang Qi Shan) outside the city offers hikes through subtropical forests to Buddhist temples and pavilions with views over the Chaoshan plain to the South China Sea.
