About Lianyungang
Lianyungang is a port city on the coast of the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu and is considered the birthplace of one of China's most famous legends: Huaguo Shan (Flower-Fruit Mountain) is said to be the mythical home of the Monkey King Sun Wukong from the classic "Journey to the West" — one of the four great novels of Chinese literature. Huaguo Mountain is now a national park with hiking trails, temples, and shrines dedicated to the Monkey King. The Shuilian Cave (Water Curtain Cave), described in the novel as the palace of the Monkey King, can be visited. Monkeys actually live freely on the mountain and accompany visitors on the hiking trails. The beaches of Lianyungang are among the most beautiful on the Jiangsu coast: Liandao Beach on Liandao Island (connected to the mainland by a bridge) offers golden sand and clear water. In summer, the beach is a popular destination for Chinese vacationers, but it is still little known internationally. Kongwang Mountain (Kong Wang Shan) houses the oldest Buddhist rock carvings in China from the Eastern Han Dynasty (1st-2nd century AD) — an archaeological treasure that proves Buddhism reached China during the Han period. As the eastern endpoint of the Eurasian land bridge, Lianyungang connects China with Rotterdam by rail — a modern echo of the ancient Silk Road. The port is among the ten largest in China.
