About Nanchang

Nanchang is the capital of Jiangxi Province in southeastern China and is located on the west bank of the Gan River near Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China. The city has a history of over 2,200 years and is famous for the Tengwang Pavilion, one of the three great pavilions of southern China. The Tengwang Pavilion (Tengwang Ge) was first built in 653 AD and has become immortalized through the famous poem by Wang Bo from the Tang Dynasty. The current structure (29th reconstruction) rises 57 meters high on the banks of the Gan River and offers a spectacular view over the city and the river. In the evenings, the pavilion is bathed in golden light. Poyang Lake, about 50 km to the north, is a nature paradise of international significance: In winter (November to March), hundreds of thousands of migratory birds rest here, including over 95% of the world's remaining Siberian cranes — a unique spectacle for birdwatchers. The lake dramatically fluctuates in size seasonally, from over 3,500 km² in summer to under 1,000 km² in winter. The cable car ride to Meiling Mountain offers panoramic views over the Gan River Valley and is particularly spectacular in autumn when the maple leaves turn the mountains red. Bayi Square (August 1st Square) commemorates the Nanchang Uprising of 1927, which is considered the birth of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. Nanchang's culinary scene is characterized by Gan cuisine (Jiangxi cuisine), known for its spiciness and intense use of chili. The city is regarded as one of the spiciest culinary cities in China.
