About Nanchong
Nanchong is a historic city in the northeastern province of Sichuan on the Jialing River, one of the main tributaries of the Yangtze. The city is known as China's silk city — silk has been produced here for over 3,000 years, and Nanchong was once a central hub of the ancient Silk Road. The Langzhong Old Town (Langzhong Gu Cheng), about 120 km east of Nanchong, is one of the four best-preserved historic towns in China. The town is located in a dramatic bend of the Jialing River and still possesses the city wall, pagodas, and temples from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Langzhong is also considered the birthplace of Chinese astronomy — here, the astronomer Luo Xiahong calculated the calendar during the Han dynasty. The Silk Culture Museum in Nanchong documents the millennia-old tradition of silk production: from silkworm breeding to spinning and weaving to the magnificent end products, the entire production chain is showcased. Nanchong's silk is still exported worldwide today. Xishan Park (West Hill) above the city offers hiking trails, Buddhist temples, and a panoramic view over the Jialing River and the city. The Zhangfei Temple in Langzhong honors the legendary warrior Zhang Fei from the Three Kingdoms period — one of the most popular eras in Chinese history. The cuisine of Nanchong is part of the famous Sichuan cuisine, but with its own specialties: Langzhong vinegar and Zhang Fei beef are known throughout China.
