About Ningbo
Ningbo is a port city in Zhejiang Province on the East China Sea and one of the oldest ports in China. Over 1,000 years ago, Ningbo was a significant center of maritime trade on the Silk Road — ships sailed from here to Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia. Today, the Ningbo-Zhoushan port is the largest cargo port in the world by throughput. The Tianyi Library (Tianyi Ge) is the oldest surviving private library in China, founded in 1561 during the Ming Dynasty. The building, with its classical garden, served as a model for imperial libraries and still houses rare prints and manuscripts today. The old town of Ningbo around the Moon Lake (Yü Hu) features traditional architecture, tea houses, and the famous Nantang-Laojie district with historic trading houses. The Baoguo Temple, located 16 km northwest, is one of the oldest wooden structures in southern China, dating back to 1013. The Zhoushan Islands off the coast of Ningbo are accessible via the longest sea bridge in China (Hangzhou Bay Bridge, 36 km) and ferries. Putuoshan Island is one of the four sacred Buddhist mountains in China and a significant pilgrimage site. Ningbo's coast also offers fresh seafood directly from fishing boats — the fish markets are among the most impressive in East China.
