About Weifang

Weifang in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong is the undisputed kite capital of the world. For over 2,000 years, kites have been built and flown here, and the city hosts the largest international kite festival in the world, attracting millions of visitors and kite flyers from over 60 countries every April. The Weifang World Kite Museum is the only one of its kind in the world: covering over 8,000 square meters, it displays kites from all eras and countries — from tiny miniature kites to hundreds of meters long kite giants. The architecture of the museum itself is designed to resemble a kite. The Yangjiabu woodcut New Year picture workshops are another cultural gem: this traditional folk art, practiced since the Ming Dynasty, produces colorful prints that are hung throughout China as good luck charms for the New Year celebrations. Yangjiabu is one of three centers for New Year pictures in China. Shihu Garden (Ten Emeralds Garden) is a classic Chinese garden from the Qing Dynasty, built by a local Mandarin: pavilions, bridges, ponds, and finely arranged rock formations create a total work of art in Chinese garden architecture. The Weifang cuisine is part of the famous Shandong cuisine (Lu Cai), one of the eight great culinary traditions of China. Particularly, the radish carving art has a long tradition here — Weifang radishes are carved into impressive edible artworks.
