About Omsk

Omsk is the second largest city in Siberia and lies at the confluence of the Irtysh and Om rivers, in the midst of the endless West Siberian steppe. The city was once the capital of the anti-Bolshevik White Army and a place of exile for Dostoevsky — the great Russian writer spent four years of forced labor here, which inspired his work 'Notes from the House of the Dead'. The Omsk Fortress — the reconstructed fortress from the 18th century — marks the founding site of the city on the banks of the Irtysh. The Nikolsky Cossack Church is one of the most beautiful churches in Siberia, with golden domes shining over the wide river. Ljubinski Street is Omsk's elegant promenade with Art Nouveau facades, boutiques, and cafes. The Wrubel Museum houses the largest art collection in Siberia. The Irtysh promenade offers spectacular views over the nearly one-kilometer-wide river at sunset. Omsk is surprisingly green: the city park on the banks of the Irtysh transforms into an oasis during the short summer, while in winter the ice festival attracts visitors with illuminated ice sculptures.
