Torshavn is the capital of the Faroe Islands and one of the smallest capitals in the world — a charming place at the natural harbor of the island of Streymoy, where grass-covered roofs, colorful wooden houses, and dramatic cliffs meet. The city belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark but enjoys extensive autonomy. Tinganes, the small peninsula in the harbor, houses the government district in historic red-painted wooden houses with grass roofs — the Faroese parliament has met here since the 9th century, one of the oldest in the world. The old town (Reyni) with its narrow alleys and dark wooden houses feels like a Nordic open-air museum. The nature around Torshavn is breathtaking: steep cliffs where puffins nest, waterfalls that plunge directly into the sea, and a landscape that constantly changes between fog, sun, and storm. The hike to the village of Kirkjubøur (10 km south) leads to the Magnus Cathedral from the 13th century and the oldest inhabited wooden house in Europe. Faroese cuisine is experiencing a renaissance: fermented fish, dried lamb, and new Nordic cuisine meet Michelin-starred restaurants like KOKS, which is considered one of the most remote gourmet restaurants in the world.
