About Rostov-on-Don
Rostov-on-Don is the unofficial capital of Southern Russia and lies on the mighty Don River, just 40 kilometers before it flows into the Sea of Azov. The vibrant million-inhabitant city is the gateway to the Caucasus and Crimea, blending Russian, Cossack, and Caucasian cultures into a unique mix. The Don Promenade — freshly renovated for the 2018 World Cup — stretches for several kilometers along the riverbank with parks, restaurants, and the modern Rostov Arena stadium. The Central Market is one of the most colorful and lively markets in Russia: mountains of Caucasian spices, fresh fruits, honey, pickled vegetables, and Don fish. Bolshaya Sadovaya Street is Rostov's magnificent main street with Art Deco facades, the historic Gorky Theater, and numerous cafés. The Cossack Quarter on the outskirts recalls the wild history of the Don Cossacks, who have dominated the steppe for centuries. Starocherkassk — the old Cossack capital 30 km away — is an open-air museum with the Resurrection Cathedral and well-preserved ataman palaces. In summer, boat tours on the Don offer views of vineyards and fishing villages.
