About Port of Spain

Port of Spain is the capital of Trinidad and Tobago and the birthplace of the largest carnival in the Caribbean. The city on the west coast of Trinidad pulses with an energy fueled by the unique blend of African, Indian, Chinese, Syrian, and European cultures. The Trinidad Carnival (February/March) is the mega event: For two days, thousands parade through the streets in elaborate costumes, accompanied by Soca music and steelpan orchestras. The steelpan was invented in Trinidad — the only acoustic musical instrument to emerge in the 20th century. In the Panorama competition, entire steelband orchestras compete against each other. The Queen's Park Savannah, a huge park in the city center, is lined with the Magnificent Seven — seven magnificent colonial villas in different architectural styles. The Maraval Strip and Ariapita Avenue offer nightlife and restaurants. Fort George on the hill provides panoramic views over the Gulf of Paria to Venezuela. Port of Spain is also a gateway to nature: The Caroni Bird Sanctuary (Scarlet Ibis), the Northern Range (hiking and waterfalls), and the Asa Wright Nature Centre (world-class birdwatching) are in close proximity.
