About Tegucigalpa

Tegucigalpa, affectionately called Tegus, is the capital of Honduras and one of the few capitals in the world without a railway. Located in a valley at an altitude of 990 meters, surrounded by pine-covered mountains, the city is a chaotic, vibrant mosaic of colonial churches, steep streets, and bustling market life. The city was founded in 1578 as a silver mining town, and the historic center preserves this heritage: The Iglesia Los Dolores with its baroque facade, the Catedral de San Miguel, and the Parque Central form the colonial heart. The twin city of Comayagüela hosts the largest markets. The Galería Nacional de Arte in the former monastery showcases Honduran art from pre-Columbian Lenca ceramics to contemporary works. The Parque La Leona offers panoramic views over the entire city. Tegucigalpa is also the gateway to Honduras' treasures: The Maya ruins of Copán (5 hours), the Lago de Yojoa (2 hours), and the national parks La Tigra and El Picacho are accessible from here.
