About Managua
Managua is an unusual capital — after the devastating earthquake of 1972, the city center was never rebuilt, and the two-million metropolis instead grew outward. The result is a city without a classic center, but with a unique identity on the southern shore of Lake Managua (Lago Xolotlán). The old cathedral, a skeletal ruin since the earthquake, stands as a memorial next to the modernist National Palace and the new cathedral — a juxtaposition of destruction and reconstruction. The Malecón, the lakeside promenade, has been modernized and offers restaurants and views of the volcanoes in the evening. The Museo Nacional de Nicaragua in the National Palace showcases pre-Columbian artifacts and the revolutionary history of the country. The Hümbes and Orientale markets are huge, chaotic labyrinths. Managua's greatest asset is its location: The Laguna de Tiscapa, a crater lake in the middle of the city, offers zipline adventures and panoramic views. In an hour, you can reach the Masaya Volcano (with active lava), Granada (colonial gem on Lake Nicaragua), and the Pueblos Blancos.
