About Apia

Apia is the capital of Samoa, the heart of Polynesia. The small town on the northern coast of Upolu is the cultural and economic center of a country that has preserved the Polynesian Fa'a Samoa (Samoan way of life) more authentically than almost any other place in the Pacific. The Robert Louis Stevenson Museum (Vailima) is Apia's most famous attraction: The Scottish author of Treasure Island and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde spent his last years here and is buried on Mount Väa. The hike to the grave offers a panoramic view of Apia. Polynesian culture is omnipresent in Apia: On Sundays, everyone wears white and goes to church, followed by a To'ona'i (Sunday feast). The Maketi Fou (market) offers tropical fruits, taro, coconuts, and Umu-prepared dishes (earth oven). Fiafia nights in hotels showcase traditional dances, fire knife dancing, and singing. Samoa's natural wonders lie at the gates of Apia: The To Sua Ocean Trench — a 30-meter deep turquoise natural pool surrounded by tropical gardens — is one of the most spectacular swimming experiences in the world. The Papapapaitai Falls (100 m), Piula Cave Pool, and the beaches of Lalomanu complete the paradise.
