About Port-Vila
Port-Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, is beautifully situated on a sheltered bay on the island of Efate in the South Pacific. This small island nation, made up of 83 islands, is the birthplace of bungee jumping — on the island of Pentecost, men have been jumping from wooden towers for centuries during the Naghol ritual, secured only by vines around their ankles. On the neighboring island of Tanna lies Mount Yasur, one of the most accessible active volcanoes in the world. Standing at the crater's edge at night and watching the lava explosions is an unforgettable experience. The Melanesian culture of Vanuatu is vibrant: Kastom villages preserve traditions that are thousands of years old. The Blue Holes of Espiritu Santo — crystal-clear freshwater pools in tropical greenery — are among the most beautiful natural wonders of the Pacific. Champagne Beach on Santo is considered one of the best beaches in Oceania. The wreck of the SS President Coolidge off the coast of Santo is one of the world's best diving spots. Port-Vila itself offers the lively central market, where women from all over Efate sell tropical fruits, kava, and handicrafts. Kava, the traditional drink made from the pepper root, is consumed in the evenings at Nakamals (kava bars) — a relaxing ritual that is a must-do.
