Tobago is the quieter, more natural sister of Trinidad and a Caribbean gem that has largely escaped mass tourism. While Trinidad is known for Carnival and industry, Tobago attracts visitors with untouched rainforests, secluded bays, and the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere. The Main Ridge Forest Reserve has been protected since 1776 and is home to a stunning variety of tropical birds, including the colorful motmot and the rare white-tailed sabrewing hummingbird. Pigeon Point, with its iconic thatched-roof jetty, is the quintessential postcard beach – turquoise waters, white sand, and the famous thatched pier that appears in every Caribbean brochure. However, Tobago's true treasures lie off the beaten path: Englishman's Bay on the north coast is a crescent-shaped bay surrounded by dense rainforest that is often deserted. Buccoo Reef, the largest coral reef on the island, can be explored by glass-bottom boat or snorkeling tour, and the nearby Nylon Pool – a natural sandbank in the open sea with hip-deep, crystal-clear water – feels like a swimming pool in the middle of the ocean. There are no direct flights from Germany to Tobago. Travel is via London, Miami, or Trinidad, with a total travel time of 13 to 16 hours. The time difference is minus 5 to 6 hours. German citizens do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. Tobago is ideal for nature lovers, divers, and those seeking tranquility who want to experience the Caribbean away from all-inclusive mega resorts.
