How quickly can I get an express passport?

The express passport costs an additional 32 euros (total price 92 euros for adults) and is issued within 3 working days. Apply in person at the citizens' office with a biometric photo, old passport/ID card, and birth certificate. In absolute emergencies (e.g., death abroad), a temporary passport can be issued on the same day — it costs 26 euros and is valid for a maximum of 1 year. The temporary passport is NOT accepted for visa-free entry by many non-EU countries (USA, Canada, Japan) — only the regular e-pass. Tip: Check at least 8 weeks before your trip whether your passport is still valid — many countries require 6 months of remaining validity.

What is an apostille and when do I need it?

An apostille is an international certification of the authenticity of a public document (birth certificate, marriage certificate, police clearance) for use abroad. It is required for: marriage abroad, residence permit, work permit, adoption, studying, or starting a business in another country. You apply for the apostille at the competent regional court or district government — costs about 25 euros per document, processing time 3–10 working days. It is valid for all countries that have joined the Hague Apostille Convention (over 120 countries). For countries that have NOT joined (e.g., Canada, UAE before 2024), you need legalization through the embassy instead.

Which documents should I back up digitally?

Photograph ALL important documents and store them in an encrypted cloud (Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox): passport (data page), ID card, driver's license, insurance policy, credit cards (front and back), vaccination card, flight tickets, hotel bookings. Use a password manager (1Password, Bitwarden) for login data, PINs, and emergency contacts. Additionally, print a copy of the passport and insurance policy and keep them SEPARATE from the original (e.g., in your suitcase, original in carry-on). Share the cloud folder with a trusted person at home who can access the documents in case of emergency.

Do I need an international driver's license?

Within the EU, the German EU driver's license in credit card format is sufficient — accepted everywhere. In the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, and most non-EU countries, the International Driver's License is strongly recommended — without it, the car rental company may refuse to issue a vehicle, and insurance may not pay in case of damage. You can obtain the International Driver's License for 15 euros at your city's driving license office — processing time: immediate to a few days, only in person with a photo. It is ONLY valid in combination with the national driver's license — always carry BOTH. Validity: 3 years, but in some countries (Japan) only 1 year.

What to do if I lose my passport abroad?

Immediately visit the local police and file a loss report — you need the file number for the embassy. Contact the nearest German embassy or consulate for a temporary travel document — this allows you to return to Germany. You will need: police loss report, passport photo (many embassies take one on-site), proof of identity (copy of the passport from the cloud!). The temporary travel document costs 26 euros and is valid for the return journey — some transit countries do not recognize it, and the embassy will assist with route planning. Therefore: ALWAYS keep passport copies in the cloud and a printed backup separate from the original.

Which countries require a return ticket upon entry?

Thailand, Indonesia (Bali), the Philippines, New Zealand, Australia, Peru, Colombia, Costa Rica, and many other countries require proof of a onward or return ticket upon entry. Airlines often check this at check-in at the departure airport — without a ticket, you will not be allowed to board. Solution for backpackers and long-term travelers: Book a fully refundable ticket (e.g., Lufthansa Flex fare) and cancel it after entry. Services like BestOnwardTicket.com create an onward ticket for 12 USD that is valid for 48 hours — sufficient for entry control. A bus ticket to a neighboring country is also accepted in some countries.

How do I apply for a visa for India online?

The Indian e-Visa is applied for online at indianvisaonline.gov.in — processing time 3–5 working days, costs 10–80 USD depending on the type of visa. You will need: digital passport photo (5x5 cm), scan of the passport data page, details of hotel and travel itinerary. The e-Tourist Visa allows stays of 30, 90, or 365 days with single or multiple entries. BEWARE of third-party websites that imitate the official portal and charge an extra 50–100 euros — the official URL ends in .gov.in. The visa is delivered via email as a PDF — print it out and present it upon arrival along with your passport.

What is the difference between a passport and an ID card for travel?

The ID card is sufficient for all EU countries, Schengen states, Switzerland, and some other countries (Turkey, Egypt only for package travelers). The passport is required for ALL non-EU destinations and contains the biometric chip (e-pass) necessary for visa-free entry into the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, etc. Many countries require at least 6 months of remaining validity on the passport upon entry — a passport expiring in 5 months is not sufficient for Thailand. The children's passport (up to 12 years) is cheaper (13 euros) but does NOT contain a chip — thus, visa-free entry into the USA is not possible; a regular e-pass for children costs 37.50 euros. Tip: Always take BOTH documents on every trip abroad — as mutual backups.

How does the e-Visa for Turkey work?

The Turkey e-Visa is applied for at evisa.gov.tr — processing time: immediate (usually within minutes), cost: 50 USD for German citizens. German citizens can also enter visa-free for up to 90 days within 180 days without a visa — the e-Visa is therefore optional and only worthwhile for longer stays or multiple entries. The ID card is sufficient for entry into Turkey for package trips — for individual trips, the passport is recommended. BEWARE: Many fake websites offer Turkey visas for 100+ euros — the official site only costs 50 USD. The e-Visa is valid from the entry date you choose for 180 days.

What documents do I need for traveling with children without both parents?

If only one parent is traveling: Many countries (Brazil, South Africa, Bosnia, Croatia) require a notarized consent form from the absent parent — in German and English. If grandparents or other guardians are traveling with the child: authorization from both parents is needed, plus copies of the parents' passports and the child's birth certificate. Unaccompanied minors (from 12 years with most airlines): authorization from both parents, UM service (Unaccompanied Minor) to be booked with the airline (50–100 euros), designate a contact person at the destination. For international child abduction, there is the Hague Convention — border officials can stop the child in suspicious situations. Always create the authorization at a notary (30–50 euros) — informal letters are often not accepted at borders.
