Tangshan is an industrial city in Hebei Province, about 150 km east of Beijing, which became globally known due to the devastating earthquake on July 28, 1976. With a magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter scale, it destroyed the entire city in 23 seconds and claimed over 240,000 lives — one of the deadliest natural disasters of the 20th century.
The Tangshan Earthquake Memorial Museum is an impressive monument: The memorial park includes preserved ruins, a memorial wall with the names of the victims, and a modern museum documenting the destruction and reconstruction. The city was completely rebuilt and is now considered a symbol of Chinese resilience.
