Drinks & Coffee Culture

Coffee — Albania's Elixir of Life

The Albanian coffee culture is legendary and an Ottoman legacy: The day begins with coffee, is interrupted by coffee, and ends with coffee. In no other European country do people spend as much time in cafés as in Albania. Drinking coffee is not a five-minute affair — it is a social ritual that can last for hours. The cafés are full, morning, noon, and night.

  • Kafe turke: Turkish coffee, cooked in a copper pot (Xhezve) on sand. Strong, sweet (or unsweetened — “pa sheqer”), with grounds at the bottom. 50–80 Lek (0.50–0.80€).
  • Espresso/Macchiato: Due to the Italian colonial period, espresso is ubiquitous. The quality is surprisingly good — Albanian espresso rivals that of Italy. 60–120 Lek (0.60–1.20€).

Raki — The National Drink

Raki is Albania's liquid soul — a clear grape brandy (40–50% Vol.), related to Greek Tsipouro and Turkish Rakı (but without anise!). Every family in the countryside distills their own raki, and it is offered to guests at every opportunity — for breakfast, lunch, as a welcome, as a farewell gift. Declining raki is possible, but a sip out of courtesy is appreciated.

In Permet, the best raki in Albania is distilled — some families also produce Mani-Raki (from mulberries) or raki with honey and herbs. A bottle of raki in the supermarket: 300–800 Lek (3–8€). In restaurants: 100–200 Lek per glass.

Wine

Albania is one of the oldest wine-growing regions in the world — wine has been produced here for over 3,000 years. The communist era almost completely destroyed the wine culture, but since the 2000s, Albanian wines have been experiencing a renaissance. Indigenous grape varieties like Shesh i Bardhë (white) and Shesh i Zi (red) produce distinctive, characterful wines. The best growing areas: Berat, Permet, Leskovik. A bottle of good Albanian wine in the supermarket: 400–800 Lek (4–8€), in restaurants: 600–1,500 Lek (6–15€).

Beer

Albania's most popular beer brand is Korça — a solid lager from the city of the same name in the southeast. Tirana (Birra Tirana) and Stela are other local brands. In restaurants: 150–250 Lek (1.50–2.50€), in supermarkets: 80–120 Lek.
