Overview of Regions
Albania can be divided into four major travel regions, each with its own character and completely different experience:
Tirana & Central Albania
For whom: City travelers, culture enthusiasts, food lovers
The bustling capital is Albania's beating heart—colorfully painted houses, vibrant café culture, Ottoman mosques alongside socialist architecture, and a rapidly growing gastro scene. Plus the surroundings with Kruja Castle and Mount Dajti.
Albanian Riviera
For whom: Beach lovers, snorkelers, road trip fans
The coast between Vlora and Saranda is a dream of turquoise water and dramatic cliffs. Ksamil offers Caribbean flair, Himara Greek village idyll, and Dhermi hidden coves. The coastal road SH8 is one of the most spectacular roads in Europe.
Northern Albania & Albanian Alps
For whom: Trekkers, adventurers, nature lovers
The "Accursed Mountains" (Prokletije) offer world-class alpine trekking—without infrastructure overkill. The route from Theth to Valbona is one of Europe's most beautiful multi-day treks. Shkodra on the lake of the same name is the cultural center of the north.
Southern Albania & UNESCO Cities
For whom: History buffs, archaeology fans, photographers
Berat's "City of a Thousand Windows" and Gjirokastra's "City of Stone" are the two major UNESCO old towns of Albania. Additionally, Butrint, an ancient site of world rank, and the Permet Valley with hot springs and the best wine in Albania.
