Burgas & the South Coast
Burgas (Бургас) is Bulgaria's fourth-largest city and the gateway to the picturesque South Coast. Less touristy than Varna, but more authentic: a lively port, a beautiful sea garden, and proximity to Bulgaria's most beautiful coastal towns — Sozopol and Nessebar.
In Burgas
- Sea Garden (Morska Gradina): Similar to Varna, a sprawling park stretches along the coast with a sculpture alley, open-air stage, and direct beach access. Festivals and concerts are held here in summer.
- Burgas Lakes: Surrounding the city are four large lakes — Bulgaria's most important bird sanctuary. Over 250 bird species have been observed here, including pelicans, flamingos, and sea eagles. The Poda Nature Conservation Center at Lake Mandrensko offers guided birdwatching tours (5 BGN/€2.50).
- Island of St. Anastasia: Bulgaria's only inhabited island is located in the Bay of Burgas. A former monastery, now a restaurant and small museum. Ferry crossing from Burgas port (12 BGN/€6 round trip).
Beaches of the South Coast
South of Burgas begins Bulgaria's most beautiful coastal stretch: wild dune landscapes, hidden coves, and crystal-clear water.
- Lozenets Beach: Quiet, natural beach with golden sand and turquoise water. Popular with families and locals.
- Sinemorets Beach: Located at the Turkish border, one of Bulgaria's most beautiful beaches: river mouth, dunes, wild forest, and crystal-clear water. Hardly any development, maximum nature.
- Irakli: Protected natural beach north of Burgas — no hotels, no bars, just sand, sea, and freedom. The beach of locals and nature lovers.
💡 Tipp
The south coast between Sozopol and Sinemorets is Bulgaria's best-kept beach secret. While Sunny Beach and Golden Sands are crowded, here you'll find deserted coves and natural beaches. A rental car is ideal for this — the coastal road offers spectacular views.
