Aarhus — Cultural Capital
Aarhus (300,000 inhabitants) is Denmark's second-largest city and was named European Capital of Culture in 2017 — since then, it has finally stepped out of Copenhagen's long shadow. The university city on the East Jutland Fjord combines world-class museums with a young, creative scene, excellent gastronomy, and the charming old town district Den Gamle By.
Sights in Aarhus
- ARoS Aarhus Art Museum — One of the largest art museums in Northern Europe, topped by the iconic Your Rainbow Panorama by Olafur Eliasson: a walkable rainbow ring on the roof with a 360° panoramic view over the city. 10 floors of art from the Golden Age to the present, including the disturbingly fascinating sculpture "Boy" by Ron Mueck (5 meters high!). Admission: 150 DKK.
- Den Gamle By (The Old Town) — A unique open-air museum with over 75 historic buildings from all over Denmark, relocated here. Three time-travel districts: Middle Ages, 1800s, and 1970s. In each house, craftsmen, bakers, and grocers work in historical costumes. One of the best museums of its kind worldwide. Admission: 170 DKK.
- Moesgaard Museum (MOMU) — Spectacular archaeological museum south of the city with a grass-covered roof serving as a ski slope and hiking trail. Highlights: the Grauballe Man (2,300-year-old bog body, perfectly preserved), Viking exhibitions, and award-winning architecture by Henning Larsen. Admission: 160 DKK.
- Aarhus Cathedral — Denmark's longest and tallest church (93 m long) with medieval frescoes among the best-preserved in Scandinavia. Admission: free.
- Latinerkvarteret — The Latin Quarter around Mejlgade and Graven is Aarhus' oldest district: cobblestones, boutiques, cafés, vintage shops, and galleries. Life pulsates here.
Aarhus Street Food
In the former bus garages on Ny Banegårdsgade, Aarhus Street Food has established itself: over 30 stalls with dishes from around the world, craft beer, and a relaxed atmosphere. The perfect alternative to expensive restaurants. Dishes from 60 DKK.
💡 Tipp
The Aarhus Card (from 399 DKK/48h) is worth it: free entry to all museums, free public transport, and discounts on restaurants and tours. Visiting ARoS, Den Gamle By, and Moesgaard already pays for the card.
