Local Transport
Transport in the Dominican Republic is an experience in itself — chaotic, loud, but functional. There is no rail network and hardly any public buses in the European sense.
Guaguas — The Backbone of Transport
Guaguas are minibuses that run on fixed routes between cities and villages. They leave when full (not on schedule!). Extremely cheap (2–8 USD for long-distance trips), but cramped, loud, and slow. Perfect for budget travelers with patience.
For long distances, there are two bus companies with air-conditioned coaches:
- Caribe Tours: The best bus company. Modern buses, A/C, fixed departure times. Main routes from Santo Domingo to Samaná, Puerto Plata, Santiago, Barahona.
- Metro: Similar standard to Caribe Tours, covers other routes. Santo Domingo → Santiago, Puerto Plata.
Important Bus Connections
| Route | Duration | Price | Provider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Santo Domingo → Punta Cana | 4–5h | 8–12 USD | Bávaro Bus |
| Santo Domingo → Samaná | 3–4h | 8–10 USD | Caribe Tours |
| Santo Domingo → Puerto Plata | 3.5–4h | 7–10 USD | Caribe Tours/Metro |
| Santo Domingo → Santiago | 2.5h | 6–8 USD | Caribe Tours/Metro |
| Santo Domingo → Barahona | 3–4h | 7–9 USD | Caribe Tours |
| Cabarete → Samaná | 3–4h | 6–8 USD | Guagua/Transfer |
Motoconcho — The Dominican Motorcycle Taxi
In smaller towns, the Motoconcho (motorcycle taxi) is the main mode of transport. Cheap (1–3 USD), fast, but without helmet and seatbelt. Negotiate the price beforehand! Indispensable in cities like Las Terrenas or Cabarete.
Rental Car
A rental car offers maximum freedom, but the traffic is adventurous: Stop signs are ignored, overtaking maneuvers are creative, Motoconchos veer off without warning. The highways (Autopistas) between major cities are well-developed.
- Prices: From 35–50 USD/day (small car). SUV/off-road vehicle from 60–90 USD/day (recommended for Samaná and the southwest).
- Providers: Europcar, Sixt, Hertz, National + local providers (often cheaper, but read the fine print!).
- Insurance: Comprehensive insurance without deductible is strongly recommended. Most local providers have high deductibles (500–1,500 USD).
- Fueling: Gasoline approx. 1.30 USD/liter. Gas stations usually accept cash only.
Uber & Taxi
Uber operates in Santo Domingo and Santiago — cheaper and safer than street taxis. In tourist areas (Punta Cana, Las Terrenas) there is no Uber; here, set taxi prices BEFOREHAND (no meter!). Taxis arranged by the resort are 2–3× more expensive than street taxis.
Achtung
Traffic in the Dominican Republic is among the most dangerous in the world (WHO statistics). Drive defensively, avoid night driving, and expect anything: Motoconchos without lights, cows on the road, overtaking in curves. International driving licenses are recommended, but the German driving license is usually accepted.
