Las Terrenas

★★ The Cosmopolitan Beach Village

Las Terrenas is the most atypical place in the Dominican Republic — and that's precisely why it's so popular with European expatriates. In the 1980s, it was a sleepy fishing village; today, an estimated 5,000 French, Italians, and other Europeans live here, running bakeries, pizzerias, and yoga studios.

The result is a unique mix: You have croissants for breakfast at a French bakery, buy tropical fruits at the Dominican market, eat sushi or Italian pasta for lunch, and dance bachata in a beach bar in the evening. All in flip-flops, all relaxed.

Las Terrenas is the best base for exploring the peninsula: El Limón Waterfall (30 min.), Playa Rincón (1 hr.), whale watching (1 hr. to Samaná city), Los Haitises (by boat from Sánchez).

Food & Drink

  • Boulangerie Française — The best bakery on the peninsula. Pain au Chocolat, baguettes, quiche. Surreally good for the Caribbean.
  • El Mosquito — Beach bar with the best cocktails. Live music and bachata in the evenings.
  • La Terrasse — Upscale French-Caribbean cuisine. The sesame-crusted tuna is legendary.
  • El Caribeño — Authentic Dominican: La Bandera, Mofongo, fresh fish. Affordable and good.

Practical Information

  • Accommodation: Boutique hotels (70–150 USD/night), apartments (40–80 USD), hostels (from 15 USD). No mega-resorts!
  • Transport: Motoconcho is the main mode of transport (1–3 USD within town). Renting a car is advisable for excursions.
  • Internet: Surprisingly good. Many cafes with fiber optics — Las Terrenas is a popular digital nomad spot.
