Traditional Architecture

Before air conditioning, people in the Persian Gulf had to find ingenious solutions to survive temperatures over 50°C. The traditional architecture of the UAE is a masterpiece of passive cooling:

Wind Tower (Barjeel)

The most distinctive element of Emirati architecture. The square towers rise above the rooftops and capture the wind: openings on all four sides direct the coolest available wind down into the building and push the hot air out. In calm weather, the tower functions as a chimney effect — hot air rises and draws cooler air in. Temperature reduction: up to 10°C. The best examples can be found in the Al Fahidi Historical District in Dubai.

Arish (Palm Frond Houses)

The simpler homes of fishermen and pearl divers were made of woven palm fronds (Arish) — light, well-ventilated, and quickly constructed. Replicas can be seen in the Heritage Village Abu Dhabi and the Hatta Heritage Village.

Falaj Irrigation

The Falaj system — underground water channels that direct groundwater from the mountains to the oases — is an engineering achievement over 3,000 years old and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The system operates purely by gravity, without pumps. The Al Ain Oasis is still partially irrigated by Falaj today.
