Finnish Peculiarities

The Silence

Finns are famous for their silence — and it is not rudeness, but a virtue. Small talk is considered superficial and unnecessary. If a Finn has nothing to say, they say nothing. Silence in a conversation is not an awkward vacuum, but a sign of respect: One listens, thinks, and speaks only when there is something meaningful to say.

The Finnish joke: "An introverted Finn looks at his shoes when talking to you. An extroverted Finn looks at your shoes." It sounds like a cliché, but it contains a kernel of truth. Finns open up slowly, but when they do, friendships are deep and genuine.

Everyman's Right (Jokamiehenoikeus)

The Everyman's Right is one of the greatest concepts in the world: Everyone is allowed to hike, cycle, ski, camp, pick berries and mushrooms, and fish (with a hand line) anywhere in nature — even on private land. The only restrictions: not too close to residential buildings, no cutting down trees, no littering, no motor vehicles off-road. Everyman's Right makes Finland the most democratic outdoor country in the world.

Coffee Culture

Finns drink more coffee per capita than any other nation: 12 kg per year (Germany: 6.5 kg). Coffee is not a luxury, but a basic necessity. Every office has a coffee break (kahvitauko), every visit is accompanied by coffee, and "shall we have a coffee?" is the Finnish way of getting to know someone better. Finnish coffee is traditionally light roasted and filter brewed — strong, clear, and without frills.

Personal Space

Finns need more personal space than most other Europeans. At the bus stop, they stand apart, in the changing room, the largest possible distance to the next locker is chosen, and in empty buses, no one sits next to a stranger. This is not hostility — it is respect for the other's privacy. The only exception: the sauna. There, one sits naked and close together. Finnish logic.
