National Parks of the Lake District
The Lake District is home to some of the most beautiful national parks in Finland. Admission is free everywhere — thanks to the Finnish philosophy that nature belongs to everyone.
Linnansaari National Park
An island archipelago in Lake Haukivesi near Savonlinna. Over 130 islands with ancient forests, cliffs, and sandy beaches. Home to the rare Saimaa ringed seals and ospreys. Only accessible by boat or canoe. Camping on the islands allowed (free fireplaces). Access: Boat from Oravi or Rantasalmi (8–15€).
Repovesi National Park
Only 1.5 hours from Helsinki and yet pure wilderness. Steep cliffs, deep lakes, suspension bridges, and a spectacular observation tower on Lake Olhavanjärvi. The Highlights Trail (Ketunlenkki, 5 km) is one of Finland's most popular day hikes. Perfect for a day trip from Helsinki or Tampere.
Nuuksio National Park
Helsinki's "home mountain": Only 40 minutes from the city center lies this surprisingly wild park with lakes, rocks, and forests. Day hikes (2–10 km), berry picking, campsites. In winter: snowshoeing. The Finnish Nature Centre Haltia at the park entrance is an architectural highlight and a perfect introduction to Finnish nature. Entrance to Haltia: 14€.
Koli National Park
The most iconic landscape in Finland: The view from the Ukko-Koli summit (347 m) over Lake Pielinen inspired the national painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela and the composer Jean Sibelius. This panorama is considered the Finnish national image. Hiking trails, ski area in winter, excellent hotel (Break Sokos Hotel Koli) with panoramic windows. Access: From Joensuu (75 km) or as part of a Lake District tour.
