Regions at a Glance
Finland can be divided into four major travel regions, each with its own character:
Helsinki & Surroundings
For whom: City explorers, design fans, cultural travelers
The capital on the Gulf of Finland combines Scandinavian design, Russian imperial architecture, a vibrant food scene, and maritime flair. The offshore fortress island Suomenlinna (UNESCO), the trendy Kallio district, and the design mile make Helsinki the perfect starting point.
Lapland
For whom: Northern light hunters, winter adventurers, nature lovers
Finland's magical north: northern lights, reindeer herds, endless fell landscapes, dog sledding tours, and the village of Santa Claus. In summer: midnight sun, hiking in national parks, gold panning at Lemmenjoki.
Finnish Lakeland
For whom: Peace seekers, outdoor enthusiasts, families
The heart of Finland: thousands of lakes connected by canals and surrounded by endless forests. Summer cottages by the lake, canoeing, fishing, steamship cruises, and the ultimate Finnish sauna experience — the Lakeland is Finland's soul.
Archipelago Coast & Turku
For whom: Island hoppers, cyclists, history enthusiasts
The southwest coast with the largest archipelago in the world (over 40,000 islands), the former capital Turku, and idyllic wooden towns like Rauma (UNESCO) and Naantali. Island hopping by ferry or bicycle is the great adventure here.
