Regions at a Glance

Guatemala can be divided into four major travel regions, each with its own character:

Antigua & Highlands

For whom: Culture fans, hikers, connoisseurs
The colonial gem Antigua with its baroque ruins and volcanoes, plus the western highlands with its indigenous markets and Maya traditions. The cultural heart of Guatemala, perfect as a starting point and base for volcano climbs.

Tikal & Petén

For whom: Adventurers, history fans, nature lovers
The tropical north: impenetrable rainforest, the majestic Maya ruins of Tikal (UNESCO), the relaxed island town of Flores on Lake Petén-Itzá, and jungle expeditions to undiscovered sites like El Mirador.

Lago de Atitlán & Maya Villages

For whom: Tranquility seekers, cultural travelers, yoga fans
The "most beautiful lake in the world" framed by three volcanoes and a dozen Maya villages, each with its own character. Panajachel as the gateway, San Marcos for yoga and meditation, San Juan for weaving art, and Santiago Atitlán for vibrant Maya tradition.

Caribbean Coast & Verapaces

For whom: Off-the-beaten-path travelers, nature lovers, adventurers
The Caribbean side of Guatemala: the Río Dulce with its canyon landscape, the Garífuna town of Livingston, the turquoise pools of Semuc Champey, and the cloud forest of Cobán. The wildest, least touristy region of the country.
