Phoenix Park★★

Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
Park: 24/7 geöffnet

The Phoenix Park is one of the largest urban parks in Europe — at 707 hectares, it's twice the size of Central Park in New York. Here, fallow deer roam freely over the vast meadows (a herd of around 400 animals, settled here since the 17th century), here stands the residence of the Irish President (Áras an Uachtaráin), and here you find a tranquility that seems surreal in the middle of Dublin.

The park was established in 1662 as a royal hunting ground and remains the green heart of Dublin to this day. Besides the deer (best seen early in the morning near the Fifteen Acres), it hosts the excellent Dublin Zoo (23.50 €, one of the oldest zoos in the world, founded in 1831), the Ashtown Castle (free), the elegant Farmleigh House (Georgian mansion, free visitor center), and the Wellington Monument — at 62 meters, the tallest obelisk in Europe.

Plan 2–3 hours for a walk in the park. The Magazine Fort at the southeast corner offers one of the best views over Dublin. Bike rental (Phoenix Park Bikes, from 8 €/hour) is the best way to explore the vast areas.

💡 Tipp

The fallow deer are best seen in the morning before 9 a.m., grazing on the meadows near the Papal Cross. Keep at least 50 meters away — especially in autumn (October/November) during the rutting season, the deer are unpredictable. Feeding is prohibited.
