Irish Humor
Irish humor is dry, self-deprecating, and ubiquitous. The Irish love to laugh at themselves, the weather, and anything that takes itself too seriously.
Typical features:
- Understatement: "Ah, it's a soft day" = It's pouring. "He's not the worst" = high praise
- Storytelling: Long stories with detours, digressions, and unpredictable punchlines
- Slagging: Good-natured teasing as a love language. If an Irish person slags you, they like you
- The Irish "Grand": "How are you?" — "Ah, grand." Means anything from excellent to terrible
Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett, Brendan Behan, Dylan Moran, Tommy Tiernan — all share the ability to combine tragedy and comedy in a single sentence.
