Guinness, Whiskey & Craft Beer

Guinness

Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000-year lease for the St. James's Gate Brewery in Dublin in 1759. Today, Guinness is the best-selling stout in the world. It tastes better in Ireland: shorter transport, nitrogen instead of CO₂ = creamier texture. A pint: €5.50–7.00.

Irish Whiskey

After a century of decline, there are now over 40 active distilleries. Difference from Scotch: triple distilled (smoother), no peat drying (no smoke). Big names: Jameson (best-selling), Bushmills (oldest licensed distillery in the world, since 1608), Redbreast (connoisseur favorite), Teeling (Dublin's new distillery), Tullamore D.E.W. and Powers.

Be sure to try an Irish Coffee: whiskey, hot coffee, brown sugar, thick layer of cream. Invented at the Foynes Flying Boat Museum (Co. Limerick) in the 1940s. Drink through the cream — do not stir!

Craft Beer

Ireland's craft beer scene is booming: Franciscan Well (Cork), Galway Bay Brewery, Porterhouse (Dublin), Eight Degrees (Cork). A pint of craft beer: €6–8.

💡 Tipp

"Sláinte" (pronounced "Slahn-tsche") is the Irish toast meaning "health." "Sláinte mhaith" (Slahn-tsche wah) = "good health" and earns respect points. Raise your glass, say it, and you're part of the group.
