Kilkenny — The Medieval Jewel★★

Kilkenny, Co. Kilkenny

Kilkenny is Ireland's best-preserved medieval city — a labyrinth of narrow lanes, historic churches, and stone buildings along the River Nore, crowned by a Norman castle and imbued with an atmosphere that takes you back to the Middle Ages. The city (about 26,000 inhabitants) is small enough to explore in half a day and large enough to be happy here for two or three days.

Kilkenny Castle (€8) dominates the city — a Norman fortress from the 12th century that was the seat of the powerful Butler family for 600 years. The interiors have been lavishly restored, especially the Victorian Long Gallery with its painted ceilings and portraits of the Butler dynasty. The park around the castle is free and a popular picnic spot.

The Medieval Mile — the stretch from Kilkenny Castle to St. Canice's Cathedral — is the historic heart of the city. Along the way, you pass the Rothe House (€7.50, a Tudor townhouse with a garden), the Shee Alms House, and the Medieval Mile Museum (€9, in the former St. Mary's Church). The St. Canice's Cathedral and its associated Round Tower (€6, climbable — the narrowest spiral staircase you'll ever experience!) offer the best view over the city.

Kilkenny has a vibrant craft beer and pub scene. The Smithwick's Experience (€16) tells the story of Ireland's oldest beer brand (since 1710). In the evening, John Street is the center of nightlife — Kyteler's Inn (allegedly Ireland's oldest pub, founded in 1324 by the alleged witch Alice de Kyteler) is atmospherically unique.

💡 Tipp

Kilkenny is ideally located between Dublin and Cork (about 1.5 hours each) and makes a perfect stopover. In August, the Kilkenny Arts Festival transforms the entire city into a stage — music, theater, and art at every corner. For hurling fans: Kilkenny is THE hurling stronghold of Ireland — a game at Nowlan Park is an unforgettable experience.
