Internet, SIM & Power
SIM Card & Mobile Data
A local SIM card is cheap and indispensable for navigation:
- Providers: Unitel (best network, recommended), LaoTelecom (ETL), Beeline
- Price: 10,000–20,000 LAK for the SIM + 30,000–50,000 LAK for 3–5 GB data (30 days)
- Purchase: At the airport (counter after baggage claim), in mobile phone shops, or at markets. Passport required.
- Network coverage: 4G in Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng, Pakse. 3G in Nong Khiaw and on the 4000 Islands. In Muang Ngoi and remote areas: no network.
Internet
Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and cafes — but the speed is often frustratingly slow. In Vientiane and Luang Prabang: acceptable (5–15 Mbit/s). On the 4000 Islands: agonizingly slow to non-existent. In Muang Ngoi: sporadic. Laos is the perfect country for a digital detox.
Power
230V, various socket types (A, B, C, E, F — a colorful mix). Universal adapter is mandatory. Power outages occur, especially:
- On the 4000 Islands: Some guesthouses have power only for a few hours (generator, 18:00–22:00).
- In Muang Ngoi: Power often only in the evenings.
- During the rainy season: Thunderstorms cause power outages in rural areas.
Bring a power bank! (at least 10,000 mAh) and a headlamp for power outages and evening walks on the islands.
💡 Tipp
Buy a Unitel SIM at Vientiane or Luang Prabang airport — it will be activated and configured on the spot. For 50,000 LAK (2 EUR) you get 5 GB of data for 30 days. This is more than enough for navigation and WhatsApp. On the 4000 Islands and in Muang Ngoi, you won't need it anyway — enjoy the offline time.
