Best Travel Time & Climate
Laos has a tropical monsoon climate with three seasons: the cool dry season, the hot dry season, and the rainy season.
Best Time: November–February (cool dry season)
The absolute recommendation for most travelers:
- November–February: The most pleasant time. 20–30°C during the day, at night in the mountains down to 10°C (Luang Prabang, Nong Khiaw — warm clothing for the evenings!). Hardly any rain, clear visibility, pleasant humidity. High season — book accommodations in Luang Prabang in advance!
- December–January: The "coolest" months. In the mountains, it can get quite cold at night. Perfect for trekking and active travel.
Hot Dry Season: March–May
The hottest months:
- March–May: 35–40°C, especially in the Mekong Valley and in Vientiane unbearably hot. Slash-and-burn causes smoke and haze (visibility problems!). April is Pi Mai Lao (Laotian New Year) — a huge water festival, but much is closed.
Rainy Season: June–October
The "Green Season" has its charm:
- June–August: Daily rain showers, usually in the afternoon (1–3h), then sun again. Everything explodes in green. The waterfalls (Kuang Si!) are at their most spectacular. Roads in the north can become impassable.
- September–October: Heaviest rain. The Mekong rises dramatically, some slow boat routes are suspended. 4000 Islands partially flooded. However: hardly any tourists and the cheapest prices.

💡 Tipp
The absolute best time for Laos is November to early February: pleasantly cool, dry, waterfalls still full from the rainy season, Mekong navigable. Those who dare the rainy season (June–August) will be rewarded with empty sights, spectacular waterfalls, and halved prices — but the mountain roads in the north are an adventure.
