Practical Information for the Gobi

What You Need to Know

The Gobi is no walk in the park. The conditions are harsh, the infrastructure is non-existent, and the distances are vast. But with the right preparation, the Gobi tour will be the highlight of your trip.

Accommodation

• Ger Camps: Along the main routes, there are simple Ger camps with beds, communal toilets (mostly pit toilets), and food. Comfort: basic but sufficient. From 25,000–50,000 MNT (7–13€) per night.
• Luxury Ger Camps: The Three Camel Lodge near the Flaming Cliffs is an award-winning eco-camp with designer Gers, private bathrooms, and gourmet cuisine. From 350€/night — opulent by Mongolian standards.
• Wild Camping: Your driver/guide has tents with them. Sleeping under the starry sky of the Gobi (without any light pollution) is an incredible experience — the Milky Way lies like a luminous band directly above you.

Packing List Specifically for the Gobi

• Sunscreen (SPF 50+) and Sunglasses: The UV radiation at altitude (1,000–2,000 m) and in the dry air is extreme. Burns are guaranteed without protection.
• Buff/Scarf for Mouth and Nose: Against the omnipresent dust on the tracks. You will find it everywhere — in your hair, ears, shoes.
• Warm Clothing for the Night: Even in July, night temperatures can drop to 5–10°C, sometimes lower in the Gobi. Fleece and a warm sleeping bag are a must.
• Water: At least 3 liters per day per person. Your guide should bring sufficient supplies — clarify this beforehand!
• Toilet Paper: There are no toilets in the Gobi. Everything happens behind the next rock — bring toilet paper and a small shovel for burying.
• Pillow and Earplugs: The Jeep seats are brutal, and the Ger camp beds are often noisy (other guests, wind on the felt). Both will save your sleep.
