Exploring the City

Ulaanbaatar (UB) is a city that simultaneously confuses and fascinates you. Almost half of all Mongolians—1.5 million people—live in a city originally planned for 300,000. The result: chronic traffic jams, smog in winter (the yurt districts heat with coal), and an energy that starkly contrasts with the empty steppe that begins just 30 km away.

Yet UB also has unexpected qualities: a vibrant café culture, excellent restaurants (Korean, Japanese, Mongolian, international), nightlife that goes on until the early hours, and a young, cosmopolitan generation that listens to K-Pop while riding horses in the countryside.

Orientation

UB stretches along the Tuul River in a wide valley, surrounded by mountains. The center is compact and walkable:

  • Sükhbaatar Square: The heart of the city with the Parliament building and Genghis Khan statue. Everything starts here.
  • Peace Avenue (Enkh Taivny Örgön Chölöö): The main axis from east to west—hotels, department stores, restaurants.
  • Seoul Street: Nightlife strip with bars, clubs, and karaoke (Mongolians are crazy about karaoke).
  • Gandan District: Around the large monastery—quieter, more traditional, with small tea houses.
  • Zaisan: Southern hill with the Soviet memorial—best panoramic view over the city.

How Much Time to Plan?

UB deserves 2–3 days: one day for the main attractions, one for museums and shopping, and possibly one for the day trip to the Genghis Khan Statue. Most travelers use UB as a base—you book your tours here, find fellow travelers in the hostel, and stock up on supplies for the steppe.
