Overview of Regions
Mongolia is vast and extremely diverse in landscape. Four major travel regions offer very different experiences:
Ulaanbaatar
For whom: Culture travelers, beginners, city explorers
The chaotic, vibrant capital is the gateway to Mongolia. Buddhist monasteries next to glass towers, a lively nightlife, and the largest equestrian statue in the world on the outskirts of the city. Every journey starts and ends here.
Gobi Desert (South)
For whom: Adventurers, desert lovers, photographers
Flaming Cliffs with dinosaur fossils, singing sand dunes up to 300 m high, the Yolyn Am Ice Gorge in the middle of the desert, and two-humped camels — the Gobi is one of the most fascinating desert landscapes on Earth.
Central Mongolia (Orkhon Valley & Karakorum)
For whom: History enthusiasts, horse lovers, nomad fans
The historical cradle of Mongolian civilization: Genghis Khan's old capital Karakorum, the UNESCO World Heritage Orkhon Valley with waterfalls and rock monasteries, and the steppe where you can stay with real nomadic families.
North (Khövsgöl Lake & Terelj)
For whom: Nature lovers, trekkers, riders
The majestic Khövsgöl Lake — Asia's "Blue Pearl" — amidst taiga forests, the last reindeer nomads in the world, and the nearby Terelj National Park with its spectacular rock formations.
