San Rock Art — 6,000 Years of Creativity

The rock art of the San is Namibia's oldest cultural heritage and is among the most significant art treasures of humanity. At hundreds of sites across the country, there are engravings (petroglyphs) and paintings that are up to 6,000 years old.

The most important sites:

  • Twyfelfontein (UNESCO World Heritage): Over 2,500 rock engravings — giraffes, rhinos, elephants, ostriches, human footprints, and the famous "Lion Man" (a human with lion paws, likely a shaman in trance)
  • Brandberg — "White Lady": The most famous rock painting in Namibia on the country's highest mountain. Despite the name, it likely depicts a male shaman in trance painting. The hike to the painting takes about 2 hours (round trip) and is only possible with a guide
  • Spitzkoppe: Rock paintings in caves at the foot of the granite mountain — less known but atmospheric
  • Phillipp's Cave (Erongo): Well-preserved paintings of hunting scenes and animals

San art was not just decorative — it had spiritual significance. Many depictions show shamans in trance states, rain animals (mythical beings that bring rain), and transformation scenes between humans and animals. The art was a window into the spirit world.
