About Bissau
Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau, is one of the least visited capitals in the world — and that's what makes it fascinating. The small town on the Geba River bears the marks of the Portuguese colonial era: crumbling Art Deco buildings, a rundown yet atmospheric old town, and a rhythm that escapes the rest of the world. The Fortaleza de São José de Amura, a Portuguese fortress from the 17th century in the city center, is the historical heart. The surrounding old town with its decaying colonial facades has a morbid charm that attracts photographers. The Mercado de Bandim is the liveliest place: a chaotic market with fabrics, fish, cashew nuts, and the pulse of West African life. Guinea-Bissau's greatest treasure is the Bijagós Islands — an archipelago of 88 islands off the coast, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and one of the last untouched natural paradises in West Africa. Sea turtles, saltwater hippos, mangroves, and scarcely visited beaches make the islands unique. Bissau is also known for its music scene: Gumbe, the West African music genre, has its roots here. During the Carnival in February, the city transforms into a colorful festival with music and masquerades.

Insider knowledge that makes your holiday better.
Apply for a visa in advance — at the embassy or consulate. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory.
Bring CFA Franc — Guinea-Bissau uses the West African CFA Franc. Credit cards work almost nowhere.
Organize Bijagós Islands in advance — boat connections are irregular. Book through local agencies or hotels.
Buy cashew nuts — Guinea-Bissau is one of Africa's largest cashew exporters. Fresh cashews at the market are a delight.
Portuguese helps — the official language is Portuguese, Creole (Kriol) is spoken by everyone.
