About Conakry

Conakry is the capital of Guinea and a city that juts out on a narrow peninsula into the Atlantic — the Tombo Peninsula, where 1.9 million people are crowded. The location between the sea and mangroves gives Conakry a unique atmosphere: salty Atlantic air, the smell of fish, and the rhythm of West African music merge into a sensory experience that is unforgettable. Guinea is the homeland of some of the greatest musicians in West Africa — Mory Kanté, Djeli Moussa Diawara, and the Ballets Africains (the oldest national dance ensemble in Africa) come from here. Conakry's music scene, shaped by Mandinka griot tradition and modern Afrobeat, is the cultural engine of the city. Live music can be found in the evenings at the Maquis (open-air bars) in the Ratoma district. The Grande Mosquée Fayçal, a gift from Saudi Arabia, is one of the largest mosques in West Africa and Conakry's most prominent building. The Marché Madina, one of the largest markets in the region, spans several blocks: pagnes fabrics, spices, dried fish, and forged gold jewelry chains. The Îles de Los, a group of islands off the coast, offer sandy beaches, palm trees, and tranquility — reachable by pirogue in 30 minutes and a welcome contrast to the chaos of the capital.
