Praia do Tofo on the southeast coast of Mozambique is one of the best places in the world to swim with whale sharks — and one of the last undiscovered beach paradises of the Indian Ocean. The sleepy fishing village on a crescent of white sand has retained a rough, authentic charm that attracts backpackers, divers, and nature lovers from around the globe. The whale sharks are Tofo's biggest attraction. Year-round (with a peak from October to March), the gentle giants — the largest fish in the world, reaching up to 12 meters — glide through the warm waters off the coast. Snorkeling tours bring visitors in contact with these majestic creatures — an experience of such intensity that one never forgets. The diving and snorkeling offerings go far beyond whale sharks. Manta rays, dolphins, humpback whales (June-November), sea turtles, and colorful coral reefs make Tofo one of the most biodiverse marine areas in Africa. The dive sites Manta Reef and Giants Castle are world-renowned for their large fish encounters. The beach itself is a postcard image: A long arc of powdery white sand, lapped by the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Fishermen pull their dhow sailboats onto the beach in the morning, and in the evening, the sun dips into the sea — all in an atmosphere so laid-back that time seems to stand still. The infrastructure in Tofo is deliberately simple. Beach lodges, backpacker hostels, and a few boutique accommodations line the beachfront road, interspersed with dive shops and restaurants serving freshly grilled fish and ice-cold 2M beer. There are no high-rises, no chains, no artificial entertainment — just the ocean, the sand, and the friendliest people in Africa. The local Makua population is famous for their hospitality. At the market in Inhambane (30 minutes away), one can find spices, fresh fruit, and the bustling activity of a Mozambican small town.
