About Victoria Falls

The Victoria Falls are the most spectacular natural spectacle in Africa — a water wall over 1.7 kilometers wide that plunges 108 meters down with a thundering roar, creating a permanent mist cloud that rises up to 300 meters into the sky and is visible from 30 kilometers away. The locals call it Mosi-oa-Tunya — the Smoke that Thunders. David Livingstone was the first European to reach the falls in 1855 and named them after Queen Victoria. Today, they are a UNESCO World Heritage site and form the natural border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. From the Zimbabwean side, 16 viewpoints along the rainforest offer breathtaking perspectives of the main falls, the Devil's Cataract, and the Rainbow Bridge, which permanently spans the gorge in sunshine. The Victoria Falls Bridge, a 198-meter-long steel arch bridge built in 1905, spans the gorge at a height of 128 meters and connects Zimbabwe with Zambia — today also the starting point for bungee jumping into the depths. The Devil's Pool on the Zambian side allows swimmers in the dry season to sit at the very edge of the falls, just inches from the edge — one of the most adrenaline-pumping experiences in the world. Helicopter flights, white-water rafting on the Zambezi (Class 5), sunset boat trips with hippos and crocodiles, as well as safaris in the nearby Chobe National Park make the Victoria Falls the ultimate adventure hub in Southern Africa.

5 travel tips for Victoria Falls

Insider knowledge that makes your holiday better.

Bring rain gear — the mist from the falls soaks everything. A waterproof phone case is a must. In high summer (March/April), the mist can be so strong that visibility may be restricted.

Devil's Pool only in the dry season — September to December, when the water level is low enough. Accessible by boat from Livingstone Island. Book early (around 100 USD).

Visit both Zambia AND Zimbabwe — KAZA UniVisa (50 USD) is valid for both countries. Zimbabwe has the better viewpoints, Zambia has the Devil's Pool.

Chobe day trip — Botswana's Chobe National Park is only 80 km away: day trip with boat safari and game drive (from 150 USD). Elephant herds in enormous density.

Book a full moon tour — during the full moon, a rare lunar rainbow occurs over the falls. Special night openings are offered.
