About Mogadishu

Mogadishu is one of the oldest cities in East Africa — founded in the 1st millennium as a trading port on the Indian Ocean, it was for centuries a hub of trade between Africa, Arabia, India, and China. Arab geographers of the Middle Ages described the city as wealthy and cosmopolitan, and Ibn Battuta praised its riches in the 14th century. Mogadishu's tragic recent history — civil war since 1991, Al-Shabaab terror, and humanitarian crises — has established the city in the news as a synonym for chaos and danger. Yet behind the headlines exists a city that is slowly rebuilding. Lido Beach, a kilometer-long white sand beach on the Indian Ocean, has become a symbol of the new Mogadishu: restaurants, cafés, and families are returning to the beach, and in the evenings, a piece of normality unfolds here that was unthinkable just a few years ago. The old town (Hamar Weyne) preserves remnants of the historic trading city: The Arba Rucun Mosque from the 13th century, Ottoman houses with carved doors, and the old port tell of a past long before the war. The Mogadishu Cathedral, an Italian colonial building from the 1920s, stands in ruins — a silent witness to destruction. **Important Note:** The Foreign Office strongly warns against travel to Somalia. The security situation remains extremely dangerous. The information described here serves to document the cultural heritage.
