About Mafia Island

Mafia Island is Tanzania's best-kept secret — a tropical island 160 km south of Zanzibar that hardly any tourist has on their radar, but is among the best diving spots in East Africa. The Mafia Island Marine Park, which encompasses the entire southern coast, protects a vast coral reef ecosystem with over 400 species of fish. Between October and March, whale sharks visit the waters off Mafia — gentle giants up to 12 meters long, with whom you can snorkel in shallow water. It is one of the most reliable whale shark habitats in the world and significantly less crowded than other hotspots. The island itself is a mosaic of coconut palms, mangrove forests, cashew plantations, and tiny fishing villages, where life seems to have changed little for centuries. Kilindoni, the main town, consists of a handful of dusty streets, a market, and the ferry terminal. Chole Bay in the southeast offers sheltered, crystal-clear waters for snorkeling. The offshore Chole Island is home to the atmospheric ruins of a medieval Swahili trading town, overgrown with giant baobabs. Mafia is not for luxury vacationers — it is a place for adventurers, divers, and travelers seeking the real, unvarnished East Africa.
