About Djerba
Djerba is the largest island in North Africa and has been a popular travel destination for German tourists for decades. The island off the southeastern coast of Tunisia combines oriental flair with Mediterranean beach life to create a unique mix that offers both relaxation and discovery. The beaches on the northeast coast around Sidi Mahres and the Zone Touristique are among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. Fine, white sand stretches for miles, and the turquoise water slopes gently — ideal for families with children. The hotel zone offers all-inclusive resorts in all price ranges, from simple to luxurious, and the beach sections are well-maintained and spacious. Houmt Souk, the island's capital, is a labyrinth of narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and vibrant markets. The souk is one of the most authentic in all of Tunisia — here you will find handwoven carpets, ceramics, silver jewelry, and fragrant spices. The fortress Borj el-Kebir at the harbor tells tales of pirates and crusaders and offers a magnificent view over the old town. The El-Ghriba Synagogue in Erriadh is one of the oldest synagogues in Africa and a symbol of the centuries-old Jewish community on Djerba. The village of Erriadh itself became famous through the street art project Djerbahood — over 250 international artists have transformed the walls with impressive murals. The crocodile museum, the flamingos in the lagoon of Bin el Ouidane, and excursions to the Star Wars filming locations in the Sahara (Matmata, Tataouine) make Djerba exciting even beyond the beach. The mild climate with over 300 sunny days and the excellent value for money make the island the perfect destination for a relaxing winter holiday.

Insider knowledge that makes your holiday better.
Obtain Tunisian Dinar: Dinar cannot be purchased abroad — exchange at the airport or in hotels. Credit cards are only accepted in larger hotels.
Dress respectfully: Wear shoulder-covering clothing in Houmt Souk and the villages. Swimwear is appropriate at the beach.
Roman Dam: The island is connected to the mainland by a 6 km long dam — a drive is worthwhile for the view of the lagoon.
Buy spices: Harissa, Ras el Hanout, and dried rose petals make perfect souvenirs — cheaper at the market in Houmt Souk than in hotels.
