About Sousse
Sousse is the pearl of the Tunisian Sahel region and a city that uniquely combines ancient history, vibrant nightlife, and beautiful Mediterranean beaches. The third-largest city in Tunisia boasts one of the best-preserved medinas in North Africa, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988. The mighty Ribat, a fortress from the 8th century, overlooks the old town and offers a spectacular panoramic view from the watchtower over the rooftops of the medina to the sparkling sea. The Great Mosque of Sousse, also from the 9th century, impresses with its fortress-like architecture without a minaret and showcases the defensive character of early Islamic architecture in North Africa. Life pulses in the medina: spice merchants, carpet sellers, coppersmiths, and leather workshops line the labyrinthine streets, while the scent of fresh flatbread and grilled lamb wafts through the air. The archaeological museum inside the Kasbah houses one of the most significant collections of mosaics in the world from Roman and Byzantine times. North of the old town lies Port El Kantaoui, a modern marina and resort with golf courses, a water park, and an international flair. Here, German vacationers can find a wide selection of all-inclusive resorts right on the beach. Sousse is also known for its nightlife - the clubs and bars along Avenue Habib Bourguiba and in Port El Kantaoui attract a young, international crowd. The city serves as an excellent base for day trips to Kairouan, the archaeological site of El Jem with its massive Roman amphitheater, or to the desert regions of the south.
