Tozeur is the queen of Tunisian desert oases and a place where the Sahara, millennia-old irrigation techniques, and Hollywood glamour meet in a fascinating way. The city is located on the edge of Chott el Jerid, a vast salt lake that shimmers in surreal mirages in the heat, with its white salt crust stretching to the horizon. Amidst this lunar landscape, Tozeur has preserved a lush palm oasis over millennia, where over 200,000 date palms provide dense shade and produce the famous Deglet Nour, the queen of dates, which is considered the sweetest and finest in the world. The old town Ouled el Hadef is an architectural jewel with unique brick ornamentation: The traditional brick facades display geometric patterns reminiscent of Berber carpets, passed down from generation to generation. This technique is unique in the world and makes a walk through the narrow alleys an experience that cannot be found anywhere else. In the Dar Cherait Museum, one can relive the history of the region from the Romans to modern times in reconstructed historical rooms. Star Wars fans will find plenty to enjoy in Tozeur: In the nearby desert, the sets of Mos Espa, Luke Skywalker's home village on Tatooine, still stand, and the nearby Matmata with its cave dwellings served as the backdrop for Lars' moisture farm. The name of the desert planet Tatooine is even derived from the Tunisian place Tataouine. Scenes from The English Patient and Star Wars were also filmed in the area. The city has its own airport with seasonal domestic flights but can also be reached by bus or rental car from the coastal cities in five to six hours.
