About Gazipur

Gazipur is located immediately north of Dhaka and is known as the green lung of the Bangladeshi capital region. The city is home to the Bhawal National Park, one of the country's most important nature reserves, combining tropical nature with the history of Bengali resistance and a growing modern economy. The Bhawal National Park covers 5,022 hectares and is the most accessible national park from Dhaka — just about 40 kilometers north of the capital. The park protects Sal forests (Shorea robusta), which once covered all of central Bangladesh and today are among the last remnants of this species. Over 200 species of animals and birds live here, including Bengal foxes, jackals, pythons, and numerous species of butterflies and birds. Well-developed hiking trails lead through the dense forest, past lakes and clearings. The Bhawal Rajbari (Bhawal Palace) tells the fascinating story of the Bhawal Zamindars — a Bengali noble family whose legal case (the Bhawal Sanyasi case of 1936) is considered one of the most famous identity disputes in world legal history. The ruins of the palace, with their crumbling arches and overgrown gardens, have a melancholic beauty. The Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park is a modern wildlife park with an African savanna area where lions, zebras, and giraffes live in semi-natural enclosures. The park offers bus safaris and is particularly popular with families. The Joy Bangla National Mosque (Jamiatul Falah Mosque) and the Liberation War Memorial (Mujibnagar Complex) commemorate Bangladesh's struggle for independence in 1971 and the central role Gazipur played in the liberation war.

5 travel tips for Gazipur

Insider knowledge that makes your holiday better.

Visa on arrival — Germans receive a Visa on Arrival at Dhaka Airport (approx. 50 USD, 30 days). Alternatively, in advance at the embassy.

Bangladeshi Taka (BDT) — 1 € ≈ 120 BDT. Cash is essential, credit cards are only accepted in upscale hotels.

Avoid the national park on weekends — the Bhawal Park is very crowded on Fridays and holidays. Much quieter and more nature-oriented on weekdays.

Plan for traffic — the Dhaka-Gazipur route can take 2-3 hours despite being only 40 km. Leave early and use a rickshaw or CNG (auto-rickshaw).

Modesty in clothing — Bangladesh is conservatively Muslim. Cover shoulders and knees, especially outside hotels.
