About Bandar Seri Begawan

Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of the Sultanate of Brunei on Borneo, is one of the richest yet least known cities in Southeast Asia. Oil wealth has brought enormous prosperity to the small sultanate, evident in its lavish mosques and golden domes. The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is one of the most beautiful Islamic buildings in Asia: golden dome, Italian marble, crystal chandelier, and a replica of a royal ceremonial boat on the artificial lagoon. The Jame Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque (29 golden domes) is even larger and more impressive. Kampong Ayer — the largest water village in the world — is Bandar Seri Begawan's most fascinating district: around 30,000 people live in stilt houses over the Brunei River, connected by wooden walkways and water taxis. The village has its own schools, mosques, and a fire department — all above the water. The rainforest around Brunei is surprisingly untouched: the Ulu Temburong National Park (Brunei's green jewel) offers a canopy walkway at 50 meters high and primary Borneo rainforest — accessible by longboat.
